What is Starling?

A pioneering industry-wide solution to verify your forest impact

Born in 2016 from a collaborative venture between Airbus and Earthworm Foundation, Starling is a geospatial solution designed to measure the environmental impact across entire supply chains, aiding in the delivery of deforestation-free commitments and upcoming EUDR compliance.

Starling uses various sources of satellite imagery ranging from 10m to Pléiades Neo’s 30cm resolution, to monitor agricultural supply chains and provide forest cover change data. Our platform can support you in fulfilling your regulatory or voluntary commitments such as EUDR, Deforestation and Conversion Free (DCF) sourcing, Rainforest Alliance certification, as well as Scope 3 GHG accounting standard.

With Starling, companies rely on accurate and actionable data to engage their suppliers, mitigate risks and verify commitments.

Introduction to EUDR

  • The EU has adopted a landmark legislation, named EU Deforestation Regulation (EUDR), whose aim is to reduce the EU's impact on global deforestation.
  • By requiring companies to prove that their products are not linked to deforestation, this regulation plays a crucial role in preserving tropical forests and fighting climate change.
  • It is now mandatory for companies to establish or update their Due Diligence System by meticulously documenting their supply chains, and conducting thorough deforestation risk assessments and mitigation.
  • The EU explicitly identifies the role of geospatial data in its framework as an essential asset for achieving EUDR objectives. With Starling, companies rely on accurate and actionable data to engage their suppliers, mitigate risks and verify commitments.

How Starling can help?

Starling helps companies understand the complexity of their supply chain and supports them comply with the EUDR:

  • Import batches of plots or supply chain data
  • Verify the geospatial validity of the plots
  • Check the deforestation status per plot
  • Control the legality risk against protected areas
  • Export your EUDR results to complete your Due Diligence

Our Starling platform is designed to meet your commitments

“Responsible companies are going beyond their ‘No deforestation’ commitment for their supply, by complementing with positive action to protect rainforests on the frontier of sourcing landscapes. Through FCF and our partnership with Starling and Earthworm Foundation, our community-led projects can benefit from ongoing satellite monitoring and verification. This guides timely action on the ground to address the cause of any deforestation alerts, ensuring the loss is not increased nor permanent..”

Sourcing raw agricultural materials in a responsible and sustainable manner is one of our top priorities. Thanks to Starling, FrieslandCampina gains greater visibility into the supply chain and actively response to high risk areas. This is enabled by satellite monitoring, direct supplier engagement, and grievance management. Starling gives a clear picture of the challenges within its supply chain and equip us with tools to address these effectively.

Nestlé has always been committed to source the raw materials we need to manufacture our products responsibly. In 2010, we made a No Deforestation commitment stating that none of our products globally will be associated with deforestation by 2020. Starling satellite monitoring is a game changer to achieve transparency in our supply chain. Today, we cover 100% of Nestlé’s global palm oil supply chains and we will extend this collaboration to cover other commodities. Data and analytics provided by Starling enable us to manage risks and perform field intervention strategies together with our suppliers to drive changes better and faster.

Colgate-Palmolive is committed to sourcing responsible palm oil that is free from deforestation. To assist us in delivering this pledge we have been testing Starling, running a pilot on a section of our palm oil supply chain. By mapping our suppliers, we aim to strengthen our supplier engagement policy and develop stronger relationships based around our NDPE policy.

Innovation and technology like Starling is accelerating our journey towards zero deforestation. This is transforming the way we manage deforestation risks in our palm oil supply chain – we are using this tool to hold our suppliers and ourselves accountable. We are satisfied with our progress, but there is much more to do. The last miles to go are always the hardest.

Our vision is to produce all of our products in a responsible and sustainable way. Running a pilot of the Starling platform in our palm oil supply chain in Northwest Ecuador, in combination with our ground teams’ drone technology, provided the tools and information to make this a reality. Receiving quarterly reports of forest cover change continues to support our transformation work on the ground by guiding our action to the areas where it is most needed.

Providing assurance to the users of our products like Nestlé and others that our pulp and paper are free from deforestation is important to us. That’s why, alongside Nestlé, we have undertaken a pilot of Starling in Arkhangelsk, Russia, to monitor 300,000 hectares of Intact Forest Landscape, which we and other stakeholders have set aside to become a forest reserve. Starling’s monitoring of the area has proven invaluable in demonstrating our commitments to the protection of this forest that is part of developing a robust long term land use plan.

Alianza Team uses Starling to Assess Peatlands and Forests Across their Palm Oil Supply Chain

In line with their goal of achievening a deforestation-free agricultural supply chain by 2025 – and in alignment with their NDPE (No Deforestation, No Peatland Expansion, and No Exploitation of People and Communities) – Alinaza Team partnered up with Starling and Earthworm Foundation to assess the current state and potential risks linked to forest and peatland conservation practices in both their current and future palm oil supply chain.

The Forest Conservation Fund supports community-led rainforest protection using Starling

Rainforests on the frontier of sourcing landscapes are rich in biodiversity and carbon, and urgently need protection. Indigenous Peoples and Local Communities (IPLCs) are widely recognised as their most effective guardians.

FrieslandCampina trusts Starling for their sustainable palm oil sourcing

The production of commodities such as palm oil, cocoa, soy, and pulp and paper is responsible for over 70 percent of tropical deforestation . To combat this, it is important for agro food industries to have detailed knowledge of their supply chains to address deforestation development risks effectively.
