Monitoring post-fire damages on palm trees using Pléiades Neo
Thanks to our Pléiades Neo 30cm resolution images, Tolaram visualises damages caused by fires on its oil palm tree plantations in Indonesia
Founded in 1948, Tolaram is a Singapore based manufacturer of consumer goods, originated from Indonesia. The group has several brands and produces the majority of the raw materials they need. Tolaram set up its own oil palm plantations and have its own palm oil refining.
In 2022, part of Indonesia was hit by major wildfires which burned millions of hectares of land and forest. Many of Tolaram’s oil palm plantations were affected and the damages were considerable.
In order to count the remaining oil palm trees from their plantations after the wildfire, Tolaram needed to use very-high resolution satellite imagery. Through our reseller PT Earthline, Tolaram ordered Pléiades Neo images on all of its plantation areas, to get enough details to distinguish the trees and count how many palm trees need to be replanted.
PT Earthline, one of Airbus' historical resellers in Indonesia, has ordered new images from Pléiades Neo satellites for its client Tolaram. Using Airbus’ OnePlan tasking offer, PT Earthline provides Tolaram with seamless ortho-mosaic imagery for reviewing and updating their oil palm tree statement.
The area of interest was fully covered in just one week (around 7000 ha of oil palm plantations captured), thanks to Pléiades Neo’s extensive data acquisition capacity. Although Indonesia is known to be very cloudy, Airbus’ tasking capacity made it possible to adapt to the complexity of these weather conditions and acquire the best images with less than 5% of cloud cover.
The use of Pléiades Neo red-edge band and its very-high resolution made it possible to detect the vegetation and distinguish the remaining oil palm trees from the plantation after the wildfire, using machine learning from GIS software.
- Pléiades Neo 30cm satellite imagery has proven to be a powerful tool for oil palm detection and counting thanks to its precision and accuracy. Its red-edge band is particularly useful for detecting vegetation, because it allows to capture variations in reflectance linked to leaf properties
- Airbus’ One Plan tasking offer is both time and cost efficient. The speed of satellite imagery tasking and acquisition as well as the geographical coverage allowed our customer to visualise the damage on their palm oil plantations quickly and on a large scale.
- Airbus’ tasking capacity adapts to the weather conditions of all regions of the world and thus makes it possible to obtain quality images with very few clouds in a short time.
- Our archive images on OneAtlas can also be used in the monitored area for before/after visualisation in the case of natural disasters and follow the evolution of the event.
