On 7 January 2025 at 9:05 AM Beijing time, a 6.8-magnitude earthquake struck Tingri County in Tibet's Shigatse region. The tremors were felt across the Himalayas, impacting neighboring Nepal, Bhutan and parts of northern India, followed by several aftershocks.

The earthquake caused widespread structural damage, destroying thousands of homes and displacing residents. The earthquake also impacted cultural sites, with several Tibetan Buddhist monasteries near the epicenter suffering significant damage.

In order to help rescue operations, the Pléiades satellites were immediately tasked to collect fresh imagery over the impacted areas. The 50cm products delivered only a few hours after the event allowed to gather first insights on the disaster extent.

Damage to buildings provide a clear depiction of the earthquake’s impacts. Tents were erected outside of the damaged areas to accommodate displaced residents and set up relief camps.
