Catfish (Clarias Gariepinus) aquaculture explains the new boom in the city and in Nigeria as a whole, which has become the world’s largest producer of African catfish. Nigeria's aquaculture production has increased from almost 22,000 tonnes in 1999 to over 300,000 tonnes in 2017 and covers over 40% of the protein intake of Nigerians.
Nigeria wants to become more self-sufficient in fish production and wants to strengthen this product for export. It prioritizes aquaculture, because of its potential to create jobs and business opportunities, in particular for women and youth.
The National Freshwater Fish Farming Research Institute in New Bussa has enabled joint public and private investment, allowing girls in the city’s high school to apply aquaculture practices to a local pond.
