Here we are in the country of football : Brazil, more precisely at the Maracana stadium located in Rio de Janeiro.
This grandiose stadium measuring 317 by 279 meters and 32 meters high is one of the most famous monuments in Rio after the Cocovado.
The stadium was opened in 1950 during the FIFA World Cup and was once the largest stadium in the world with 200,000 seats. Although its capacity has been reduced, its symbolic meaning remains.
With this Pléiades Neo HD15 image, the stadium’s impressive circular design is clearly visible. The very high resolution allows us to see that the extensive roof that covers a large part of the stands, providing shade and shelter. Surrounding the stadium are various infrastructures, including an Olympic swimming pool as well as the silver dome of the Ginásio do Maracanãzinho, an indoor stadium that can accommodate 12,000 people.
Did you know? Pelé scored his 1,000th goal at the Maracanã stadium on November 19, 1969.
