France

30/01/2023

The small Provençal island of Porquerolles is home to a collection of 800 varieties of Mediterranean fruit trees, cultivated and preserved on 180 ha largely thanks to its beneficial microclimate.

Date palms, almond trees and peach trees are cared for in the midst of 250 varieties of fig trees with multiple flavors and 300 varieties of olive trees including a hundred wild varieties.

Created in 1979, the National Mediterranean Botanical Conservatory of Porquerolles is responsible for the inventory of flora, the census of threatened species and the fight against invasive exotic plants. Since 2001, the Conservatory has safely kept seeds of more than 1,900 species from all around the Mediterranean.
