29.01.2026
From 17th to 25th January 2026, major wildfires happened in south-central Chile, in the Bio-Bio and Ñuble regions, roughly 500 km south from Santiago, the capital. Very hot temperatures, violent winds and droughts conditions increased the intensity and complexity of these fires. In total, 27,577 hectares were burnt by the fires. Many citizens had to be evacuated and major damage was caused to infrastructure. A night curfew was set up in the most affected areas, while a state of catastrophe was declared in the Bio-Bio and Ñuble regions. Our thoughts go to all affected communities.
