World Maritime Day

Spotlight on Chittagong port, Bangladesh

21/09/2023

Ranking 3rd in South Asia after the Port of Mumbai and the Port of Colombo, Chittagong port manages over 90 percent of Bangladesh's export-import trade and is used as a transshipment hub for India, Nepal and Bhutan.

One of the world's oldest ports with a functional natural harbor for centuries, Chittagong appeared on ancient Greek and Roman maps. Today, Chittagong accounts for 12% of Bangladesh's GDP, including 40% of industrial output, 80% of international trade, and 50% of tax revenue.
Second-largest city in Bangladesh after Dhaka with nearly 9 million of inhabitants, Chittagong is rapidly tackling the challenges it faces. As an example, several environmental projects were launched, such as the 3,5 km long Karnaphuli Tunnel under the river or a desalination surface water treatment launched in 2015 to enable the port to become self-sufficient in water supply.

On the occasion of World Maritime Day, Pléiades Neo captured various maritime locations within Chittagong port to showcase its economic activity.
