Hidden in the center of New Zealand’s Waikato region, Matamata is one of the most iconic fantasy movie film sets of the past 25 years. This small village is where Tolkien’s beloved little folk with big feet came to life in Peter Jackson’s adaptations. To bring this fantasy to life and convey realism in the movies, many sets were built for real but this is the only one still standing today.
