A vital waterway for the region
The Songhua River is a major river in northeastern China. Stretching over 1,400km, it flows through key regions like Harbin before joining the Amur River.
The river plays a key role in agriculture, industry and transportation. In winter, it freezes, becoming a hub for ice activities and cultural events.
Rich in biodiversity, the river welcomes various fish species and wetlands, making it ecologically important. However, it has also faced environmental challenges, including pollution incidents which highlighted the need for stronger environmental protections.
