Urban Mapping with Pléiades Neo HD15
Challenge
Overcome aerial imagery cost constraints and infrequent acquisition thanks to the complementary use of satellite imagery
The Bordeaux metropolitan area, Bordeaux Métropole, with its fast urban growth and ambitious development projects, needs precise and fresh data for efficient urban management. Urban mapping is key to city planning, infrastructure management and sustainable development.
The city had been exclusively using aerial mapping until now, but aerial imagery acquisition is constrained by limited collection windows, integration challenges and infrequent updates, with processing cycles that can take up to six months. As a result, the cities of the area often lack the timely data they require.
Pléiades Neo HD15 for urban mapping
- The use of satellite imagery in urban mapping has been rising over the years. Pléiades Neo, with its 30cm resolution, and an enhancement via HD15 processing, offers easy identification of urban elements: buildings, roads, green spaces.
- Pléiades Neo HD15 is ideal for: the identification and analysis of street networks, the identification of areas at risk of natural disasters, infrastructure mapping and surveillance, roof analysis, green spaces analysis.
Did you know?
The level and sharpness of details in Pléiades Neo and Pléiades Neo HD15 imagery makes it particularly relevant for change detection thanks to algorithms which allows cities to quickly identify changes in infrastructures or the need for urban work.

Solutions
As a solution, Bordeaux Métropole has been provided with bi-annual Pléiades Neo imagery. Pléiades Neo and its daily revisits allow for regular updating of data and the 14km² swath means a single satellite can cover a large area rapidly.
Al data is then integrated into the Geographic Information System to make it available to all cities of the area for urban development and canopy monitoring.
Benefits
The coherence of data ensures precise urban mapping to support decision-making.
Mapping with Pléiades Neo is a cost effective alternative to aerial surveying methods.
With high revisit capacity, Pléiades Neo offers fresh imagery for cities in constant change.
Pléiades Neo HD15 enhances pixel colour and quality without generative AI, ensuring data integrity.
Customer testimonial
The Pléiades Neo HD15 satellite imagery provides our metropolitan area with a quick, frequent, high resolution coverage of our whole territory adapted to our budget. This imagery comes as a complement to traditional aerial imagery, which frequency of acquisition spans over several years. In particular, it allows us to ensure a better monitoring of our urban area through change identification.

Bordeaux Métropole is a metropolitan area that brings together 28 cities by the river Garonne, in the Gironde department, in the South West of France. With more than 850,000 inhabitants, the intercommunal structure represents an area of 578.3km² with various urban development and land administration problematics.
