Airbus Defence and Space and Space Compass strengthen their collaboration around optical space-based connectivity

24 April 2026

A new strategic partnership has been established between Airbus Defence and Space and Space Compass. The partnership, building upon the pioneering optical communications activities of both parties, will focus on next generation space-based optical connectivity solutions covering both space-to-space and space-to-ground use cases.

An initial focus of the partnership will be to study how optical communications can best be leveraged to deliver real-time Earth Observation using Space Compass’ as a service model with future space assets. In addition other future use cases, designed to benefit from the inherent advantages conferred by optical communications, will be jointly developed and deployed. These include:

  • Ultra-high capacity communications services that are able to transfer Terrabytes of data at speeds comparable to ground-based fibre optics.
  • The creation of enhanced security features using bidirectional laser beams.
  • Seamless connectivity utilising advanced terminal technology to connect aircraft and drones directly with a satellite relay network in a networked system of systems.

Collectively these initiatives will help to ensure that both Airbus Defence and Space and Space Compass will maintain their position as pioneers in this cutting-edge technology and will be able to deploy solutions for the benefit of our customers.

Space Compass is a visionary partner that has already adopted key Airbus optical infrastructure. Strengthening our relationship now allows us to accelerate the industrialisation of technologies Airbus has pioneered: from space-based data relays to cross-atmospheric links. Together, we are ensuring that high-speed intelligence reaches the ground exactly when it is needed.
