Unleashing the Potential of Agriculture with Satellite-Based Applications
Growing agricultural challenges call for sustainable practices and increased crop production, driving the demand for precision farming services. Earth observation services meet these needs by providing reliable data, easy access and innovative digital services to support the industry’s growth.
Supporting productive and sustainable practices
- Boost crop yields and enhance harvest quality
- Optimisation of crop management and resources
- Improving the efficiency of fertilizer inputs
- Ensuring the safety of the environment and groundwater
- Estimation of meadow growth
- Forecasting potential forage shortages
- Compensation for farmers in the event of climate hazards
- Updating information systems and practices
- Facilitating the control of subsidy allocation
- Implementation and digitalisation of rural cadastres
- Improvement of agricultural statistics
- Support for farmers and sustainable farming practices
Farmstar
For the past 25 years, Farmstar has been helping French farmers optimise their crop management and resources efficiency through satellite-based precision agriculture. Co-developed by Airbus and Arvalis, a leading agricultural technical institute, Farmstar combines satellite imagery with strong agronomic expertise to provide customised recommendations throughout the crop cycle, from seeding to harvest, for crops such as wheat and barley.

Grassland Production Index
Airbus’ has developed a satellite-based index following the grassland production during the growth season and estimating production variations compared to the previous years. This index is used by insurers to generate insurance products aiming at compensating farmers for the loss of grassland production caused by climate hazards. GPI has been endorsed by a scientifc expert committee operating under the authority of the French Ministry of Agriculture.
Institutional agriculture
Airbus supports agricultural institutions by modernising agricultural practices and policies with timely and accurate geospatial insights. Our analytics include automatic field delineation for extensive crop monitoring, vegetation map time series, and crop type identification. They integrate with any platform, making it easier to control how subsidies are awarded, as well as establishing rural cadastres, and enhancing agricultural statistics.

Satellite imagery in agriculture
Airbus leads the way in agricultural innovation through its diverse satellite constellation. From broad coverage to detailed imagery, our technology empowers relevant stakeholders in setting up more productive and sustainable practices. Farmers, insurers and institutions benefit from accurate, timely insights to meet the challenges imposed by climate change, the political, economic and regulatory context, and ensure sustainable development of agricultural activities.
