Challenge

The production of commodities such as palm oil, cocoa, soy, and pulp and paper is responsible for over 70 percent of tropical deforestation. To combat this, it is important for agro-food industries to have detailed knowledge of their supply chains to address deforestation development risks effectively.

FrieslandCampina is a large international dairy company. Part of their products require the supply of raw materials from outside their dairy chain, including palm oil. The company is committed to ensure its sourcing, production and financial investment does not cause or contribute towards gross conversion of natural ecosystems by 2030. Responsible palm oil sourcing being one of their top priorities, all sourced palm oil is required to be RSPO certified.

To verify its no deforestation commitments, FrieslandCampina trusts Starling and our partner Earthworm Foundation to enhance the traceability of their palm oil supplies and ensure sustainable and ethical practices in their supply chain.

Our solution

To support FrieslandCampina in its no deforestation commitments, we deploy Starling in part of their palm oil supply areas in Southeast Asia. Our solution combines Airbus’ cutting edge technology to spot forest cover change and link it back to specific supply chain, as well as Earthworm’s foot on the ground and supply chain expertise with presence in more than 20 countries. FrieslandCampina receives insightful reports on a quarterly basis flagging high-risks suppliers linked to top 3 cases of deforestation, enabling them to take action with the identified suppliers.

The no-deforestation scores are showcased on the report and are built based on impact-driven and proven NDV methodology thanks to the collection of Traceability To Plantations (TTP) and Traceability To Mills (TTM) data that are reflected on the score. On the quarterly basis, FrieslandCampina can monitor the progress of their no deforestation and conversion journey by monitoring those scores with the objective to achieve a 100% deforestation and conversion-free.

Additionally, every report contains key recommendations and actions to be taken, supporting FrieslandCampina in engaging with their key suppliers and accompany the transformation of their supply chain.

Benefits
  • Enhanced transparency: Starling enables FrieslandCampina to assess their leading suppliers in Southeast Asia and provides detailed insights into the supply chain from plantation mills, ensuring traceability to the plantation.
  • Improve traceability: Thanks to this level of clarity, FrieslandCampina is able to better understand and address the environmental and social issues within their supply chain.
  • Deforestation and conversion monitoring: Utilising Airbus’ high-resolution satellite imagery, Starling helps them monitor deforestation and conversion activities, even beneath cloud cover, allowing them to identify and mitigate any contributions to deforestation.
  • Supplier engagement: Through the analysis provided on the quarterly reporting with key recommendations and actions to be taken, FrieslandCampina can engage and build capacity with suppliers in terms of deforestation and traceability.
  • Transformation of the supply chain: By enhancing traceability and engaging with suppliers, they are able to bring the company closer to its responsible sourcing commitments and pave the way for a more transparent and responsible supply chain.

Cocoa | Regenerating the Cavally Forest in Ivory Coast

The Cavally Forest Reserve is one of the last intact forest reserves in Ivory Coast, the world’s top producer of cocoa. Most of this cocoa is grown by small farmers, and Ivory Coast has lost a significant amount of forests trying to meet global chocolate demand.
