Alianza Team uses Starling to Assess Peatlands and Forests Across their Palm Oil Supply Chain

To make their palm oil supply chain more transparent, Alianza Team is working with Starling to monitor deforestation and assess peatlands

PicturePeople.jpg
Challenge

In line with their goal of achieving a deforestation-free agricultural supply chain by 2025 – and in alignment with their NDPE (No Deforestation, No Peatland Expansion, and No Exploitation of People and Communities) – Alianza Team partnered up with Starling and Earthworm Foundation to assess the current state and potential risks linked to forest and peatland conservation practices in both their current and future palm oil supply chain.

Originally from Colombia, Alianza Team is a multi-Latin American organisation and a leader in lipids, nutrition and frozen bakery products. Palm oil is a key ingredient in their portfolio, and the company fully recognizes that development and growth must go hand-in-hand with sustainability. That’s why responsible palm oil sourcing is one of their top priorities.

By joining forces, we aim to build more resilient supply chains that protect critical ecosystems and support sustainable practices - making a measurable impact in safeguarding our planet’s forests for future generations.

Our solution

To support Alianza Team in meeting their no-deforestation commitments, we monitor forest cover across their palm oil supply chain using the Starling solution – powered by Airbus’ high-resolution satellite constellation and Earthworm’s foot-on-the-ground and supply chain expertise. Using Starling data, Earthworm conducted peatland assessments across multiple LATAM countries to quantify the impact of supply chains on these unique ecosystems and prevent future deforestation risks.

The analysis included verifying the total area of forests, peatlands, and intact peatlands within Alianza Team’s supply chain. Identifying and quantifying these areas is essential for biodiversity conservation, as peatlands store large amounts of carbon and play a key role in climate change mitigation.

This study enables Alianza Team to focus and prioritize their conservation efforts within their plantations – supporting the protection, conservation, and restoration of each type of ecosystem.

Benefits

Together, we are embarking on a journey to promote responsible sourcing of palm oil. Through this partnership, we are committed to:

  • Enhanced transparency: Starling enables the Alianza Team to assess their key suppliers in Latin America and provides detailed insights into the supply chain from mills down to plantations - ensuring full traceability to the plantation (TTP)
  • Improve traceability: Our goal is to go beyond mill-level traceability and achieve traceability to plantation. This deeper visibility helps us better understand and address the environmental and social issues within the supply chain
  • Identification of risks and opportunities: Gaining clearer insight into the Alianza Team’s supply chain, allows the company to build targeted strategies that reflects the specific characteristics of each region
  • Progress towards a sustainable and inclusive supply chain: by prioritizing high-risk areas, strengthening partnerships with local stakeholders, and providing support to both smallholders and large producers, we can foster more inclusive and resilient systems
  • Prevention of future Deforestation risks: by applying Starling data to peatland ecosystems, we can quantify the impact of palm oil sourcing on these unique environment and proactively mitigate future deforestation risks
Customer testimonial

Our partnership with Earthworm Foundation and Starling has supported us in our commitments to biodiversity and zero deforestation in our palm supply chain. Through a rigorous monitoring, verification, and reporting process, we have been able to proactively identify and address potential risks, implementing solutions that not only mitigate our environmental impact but also have a positive impact on nature.

Oil palm trees health in Malaysia

MYSA, the Malaysian Space Agency, is developing indicators to monitor the health of plants to support agriculture and forestry. A major priority is the health of oil palm trees, essential to Malaysia’s position as a leading palm oil producer.

FrieslandCampina trusts Starling for their sustainable palm oil sourcing

The production of commodities such as palm oil, cocoa, soy, and pulp and paper is responsible for over 70 percent of tropical deforestation . To combat this, it is important for agro food industries to have detailed knowledge of their supply chains to address deforestation development risks effectively.

Monitoring post-fire damages on palm trees using Pléiades Neo

In order to count the remaining oil palm trees from their plantations after the wildfire, Tolaram needed to use very-high resolution satellite imagery. The area of interest was fully covered in just one week (around 7000 ha of oil palm plantations captured), thanks to Pléiades Neo’s extensive data acquisition capacity.
