Building the first map of global coffee production to support JDE Peet's
Using Airbus's advanced satellite technology, the Coffee Canopy Partnership will map coffee farms at plot level, identify areas of forest loss, and work with producing-country governments to restore landscapes and prevent future deforestation.

Challenge
Address the historical lack of precise mapping data.
In the context of the European Union Deforestation and Forest Regulation (EUDR), it is no longer possible to market coffee grown on land classified as forest after December 2020. This measure risks excluding millions of smallholder farmers, despite their sustainable farming practices, simply because existing maps incorrectly classify their agroforestry or shade-grown plots as forests.
In keeping with their commitments, JDE Peet's and its partners sought a solution to continue positively impacting people, the planet, and the future of coffee and tea, with the mission “No coffee at the expense of forest”.
To be able to identify areas at risk of deforestation post-2020 and thus support farmers and remediate recent deforestation, the objective was to address the historical lack of accuracy in mapping data, which has frequently resulted in coffee farms being misidentified as natural forest.
Our solution
The world's first comprehensive, openly accessible map of global coffee production
Developed in collaboration with JDE Peet's and leading coffee companies, we've created the world's first comprehensive, openly accessible map of global coffee production to identify deforestation risk, support landscape restoration and protect the livelihoods of millions of smallholder farmers. This project is called the Coffee Canopy Partnership.
By combining Pléiades (50 cm) and Pléiades Neo (30 cm) satellite imagery with advanced artificial intelligence models trained by Airbus on large datasets, the Partnership will map coffee farms at plot level, identify areas of forest loss, and work with producing-country governments to restore landscapes and prevent future deforestation.
This initiative was launched in East Africa with the ambition of expanding across the entire coffee belt by 2027, through expanded industry and institutional co-investment. For this first phase, we have therefore covered 1.2 million square kilomets of coffee landscapes across Ethiopia, Tanzania, Kenya, Uganda, Burundi, and Rwanda.
The pilot phase is supported by the UK Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO) and endorsed by the European Coffee Federation, the International Coffee Organization, and the UN Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO).

Benefits
Ensuring accuracy and transparency
Thanks to Airbus expertise, JDE Peet's and its partners can act to support farmers and remediate recent deforestation:
- A coffee land-use map at EUDR cut off-day and today: Airbus delivers the baseline map (EUDR cut-off day) and the refresh map (most recent imagery) as well as reports and diachronic studies to be able to track changes in the coffee land use.
- Enable deforestation remediation: By comparing forest maps with coffee plot data, the project will identify instances of actual coffee-related deforestation and engage with origin countries and communities into their remediation.
- Transparent data: The Coffee Canopy Partnership will give all stakeholders – from smallholder farmers to governments – access to reliable, science-based information for decision-making through an openly accessible geospatial platform.
- Protect farmer livelihoods: Accurate identification of coffee plots under shade or agroforestry systems will prevent unfair market exclusion. Farmers will gain free access to regularly updated geolocation data of their plots, minimising administrative burdens, such as those related to EUDR compliance.

Customer testimonial
“A sustainable coffee industry is one in which there is zero coffee production at the expense of forests. To make this happen, we’re launching the Coffee Canopy Partnership to move beyond fragmented company initiatives and work together at a landscape scale – mapping and protecting entire coffee-growing regions, not just individual supply chains. This is not another certification scheme; the Coffee Canopy Partnership is a powerful, sector-led movement to ensure that forests remain vibrant and coffee deforestation-free for generations to come. We warmly invite all players in the coffee sector to join us.”
